Into the Mind and Heart of a Special Needs Child

  • Post category:Blog

Stony likes to wake up very early every day. As soon as he’s awake, I’m awake too.
The house is silent. Peaceful bliss. These hours together I value so much. Me and Stony time.
The weekends are for making great memories together; making the best of our special times together. Chatting together about everything and anything, playing games and being silly, and eating our breakfast together. It’s these moments I treasure the most. 🙂
For Stony, these slow paced, private times together are so important. He really comes out of his shell; opening up and being completely himself: when Stony, is the real Stony. On one of these early mornings together, we had a very interesting discussion. This particular discussion revealed so much and it’s something I will never forget and one that I wanted to share with you all.

Stony likes to play with his toy Geomag. The Geomag is a magnetic construction toy; it’s basically colorful magnetic sticks that you can build all kind of things with. He carries them around everywhere in his black box.

It was a bright and happy morning. We sat on the carpet, the sun was just rising, a beautiful image. Stony decided he wanted to play with his magnetic sticks. As he opened the black box he noticed a piece from one of his other magnetic toy sets. This was from his Magnetic Polydron set, and mixed in with his Geomag’s was a little red triangle. This odd magnetic triangle was embedded and stuck to the colorful magnetic sticks.

Stony just watched the red triangle mixed and jumbled with his magnetic sticks and from that moment our conversation evolved:

Stony: “Mum look!” as he was showing me the box with the odd triangle piece. “This piece has somehow gotten mixed up with the other magnets”
Me: “Yes Stony, how funny!”
Stony: “Mum, it is a mistake. This triangle is a mistake” and he started to kinda waggishly smile.
Me: “Yes Stony, it is a mistake.” as I smiled back at him.
Stony: “It is a mistake. Just like me.” he whispered.
Me: “What do you mean Stony?” I asked him all puzzled. I was also smiling, keeping a happy facial expression, but I felt my heart gearing up.
Stony: “I am a mistake Mum. I know.” he told me very gently. I was still waggishly smiling at this point. “and Carter is a mistake too”, Stony continued. (Carter is another special needs boy in Stony’s special needs class.)
Me: “Stony, if you are a mistake, then I am a mistake and Suzi, your sister, is also a mistake.” as I continued smiling.
Stony: “No Mum, Suzi is not a mistake.” still with his happy expression.“But I know, I am a mistake”.

(It was at this moment I had to quickly decide whether to burst out crying and hug him tight, or to be a strong wise mum. This is how I replied:)

Me: “Stony nobody can be a mistake in this World. Everything and everybody is here for a reason. Stony is teaching Mum and Dad so many important things that we need to know, this can not be a mistake.”

Stony’s eyes fixed on me..and whispered: ”How do you know this, Mum?”

We then continued to talk about the reason and importance of everything existing in this World. How Stony (and also Carter) are very important. They show and teach us Mum’s and Dad’s, and also many other people, that this life is full of so many very important and interesting things; things that we would not be able to learn from anyone else!
A couple of minutes passed. This deep and intense talking gave me this sudden drive inside, so, grabbing the odd red triangle magnet and some of the other magnetic sticks, i put this shape together and laid it out easily for Stony to see:

I was totally astonished! This little combination of magnets gave me goosebumps! I could see how the two different types of magnets completely matched! The three colorful (Geomag) sticks perfectly embraced the odd red triangle.
It was a perfection. A perfect fit. Not a mistake of any sort.

Stony and I were just eyes glued to this new perfect shape. So amazed, I told him:

“You see Stony, nothing is a mistake. Everyone and everything is here in the world for a reason. Everyone is equally important and fit perfectly in this World. Even if sometimes it seems different.”

Stony was still staring at the new creation. Holding it in his palm, his eyes twinkled as he gently smiled.
I knew he got the message.
Whoever sent it to him.♥
